I'm going to just start with my question and go onto the introduction later...
Why exactly is this forum called "Death by Aspirin"? I'm sure it's been asked before, but I poked around in the archives and was unable to easily find the answer.
I know the third doctor mentions something about a pill he's offered being for the "wrong metabolism" and saying that it will probably kill him, but it's not very clear. As I've read through some of the fanfiction, I've run over numerous references to the Doctor being allergic to aspirin and sometimes penicillin. But when I've looked it up in the wikis I can't find any mention of it, and my friends who turned me onto the series have never heard of such a thing.
What am I missing?
---------------------------------------------------------------------- And now the introductions...
Hi, I'm pretty new to the whole Doctor Who fandom. I was having a movie party at my house with some friends and some of my newer friends I met in marching band insisted I watch a couple of episodes on my laptop with them. I was hooked.
I started with 9 in the new series, and am currently burning my way through the newer stuff. I'm almost done with series four. I've gone ahead and watched a couple of episodes with 3, and frankly, he's awesome too, so I'll probably get to watching all the old stuff eventually.
Christopher Eccleson was fantastic, and David Tennant has been spectacular so far, showing himself to be an amazing actor. I'll be sad when I finish his run, but I'm excited to see where Matt Smith takes it! ^^
I'm excited to be part of this community, and hope to have many long, involved, and deeply geeky conversations with all of you! XD

Aquabluejay, before I say welcome I will say it's (death by aspirin) from "The Mind of Evil" the Doctor says a tab of aspirin could kill him. It's the classic series, which is awesome and you've quite a fun journey ahead of you discovering all the wee corners of the Whoniverse. Mind you don't look too closely at the plot-holes though, daleks live there.
I started with the fourth doctor myself and find it terribly hard to pick one as my favourite, however in the list of the ones I most relate to are: Four, Five, Seven and Ten. I love eight, but mostly like JJpor's war-torn scarred version of him (it's easily accessed over at Teaspoon) I truly do like them all though. Eleven is quickly growing into somebody who could make my list.
Welcome to the best little board on the interwebz (had to, never want to again, do remind me) we're glad to have you! You were lucky enough to stumble across a friendly discussion board where we value the person talking more than our personal "fanon" good on ya!

Aquabluejay - welcome! ;D Merry has beaten me to answering the aspirin question, which is probably just as well because I always get the stories mixed up and say it was something other than The Mind of Evil. Don't ask me why.
But yes, we have a pretty wide range of Doctor Who fans here, people who love various different aspects of the show over the years; some like yourself who discovered the new series and came to Old Who that way, and old timers like me who were into the old series before there even was a new series, and we all get on and generally act silly and geek around. It's great. ;D
So I hope you enjoy your time here. And Three is an excellent choice for your first taste of classic Who - wait til you see Four. Or Seven! ;D

Many welcomes! Nine is a good chap and I'm sure you'll find (as all of us have eventually) and every last one of them has something to love about them. Do go ferreting about and feel free to respond on any of the topics new or old (we're happy to re-hash and wander the landscape in various directions topically) - looking forward to having you join in the family.
Three's my favorite, though he often has to defend that position from One and Two with occasional ambushes by Four and Seven, but I like them all. ^_^

Starting with the question -
The reference is from The Mind of Evil (which is IMHO one of the absolute best Three stories out there, even if it is in black and white) but the type of pill Three is saying will kill him isn't ever specified. I think fanon decided it was Aspirin because it makes the most sense for Jo (who doesn't have a medical background) to be offering something she recognizes and knows how to use. And since Who canon is the most malleable canon you will ever meet it sort of became truth by consensus I guess?
It's possibly not the best or most obvious name the forum could have (and we've had at least one person stumble in here thinking we were a medical forum discussing the dangers of painkillers...?!) but it's set in stone (or at least in pixels) now.
Anyway, the DbyA welcomes you!
Nine's where I started too and I've got a special fondness for him and his ears. He'll always be my Doctor. Three, Seven, and Eleven are current tied with him for favourite because apparently I like odd Doctors the best (and Two, because he's brilliant, and Four, because of the scarf, and Eight, because his hair is floffy, and... well... all of them).
;D

Thanks so much for the warm welcome and the answers!
Can't wait to get involved with the site now that I've stumbled across it, and learn more about all the old doctors too. With any luck, I may be able to drag my little brother downstairs and force him to finish watching season four of the newer series with me! ^^

Clocket, are you quite sure? I really thought he said something like "For instance a tablet of aspirin could kill me" or the like, but it has been ages since I saw it and I cannot find quotes anywhere. Aqua (as ABJ is just not going to happen sorry) good idea grab him and force him, we whovians have sooo much in common with cybermen!

Welcome to the site, aquablue. It's a great site. Lost of great people and fun conversations and we all watch an episode of Doctor Who on Saturdays.
Though I'm curious as to the name of the site too. I know where it came from, but why? How'd you guys choose it?

Welcome, aquabluejay! I hope you're enjoying yourself here, and yes, please do come to DW Live on Saturday if you can make it (the thing that RTP mentioned) - more information is in the Announcements forum. As for the aspirin thing, I checked TARDIS Wiki and they have this to say: I'm actually pretty surprised that it was never official canon. I suppose it's one of those bits of fanon that become so prevalent that you assume they are. Huh.

wow, I concede, how weird though, I swear I remembered him saying "oh no, Jo, for instance, a tablet of aspirin could kill me" I feel kinda silly now, as if some meme crawled inside my brain and altered my memories.

RTP. Heh. I find that such a humorous nickname, for some reason. It makes me feel all important. Only important people use their initials, you know. = )
And for DW Live nights, be prepared for mayhem, chaos, and complete insanity!... In abundance. = ) But that just makes it super fun. Oh, and don't expect to actually watch the show. Heh.
And that's so surprising. I was convinced that they called it aspirin in the show and now I'm not even sure why. That's a really great example of how powerful and unique the Doctor Who fan-Universe is.
No, wait, now I'm second-guessing this. I remember that line, too, Merry. That was the line I was remembering exactly to the letter. That can't be coincidence, can it?

As I said in the beginning, I looked up the mind of evil, and as far as I could tell, all he says (or gasps out more accurately) is that it's the "wrong metabolism" and "would probably kill me". They never do say what the pills are, not even the guy who gives Jo the pills to give to the Doctor.

LoL, about the cybermen! That's kind of why I'm going into the basement actually. My brother doesn't have a laptop so he uses the desktop that's down there, so he's pretty much down there constantly. I have my laptop, so I take it down and set it on a side table. I basically corner him into watching. I'd be way ahead of where I am now, but I want to watch it with him. (Yes, this is totally what I call quality time with my little brother! XD ) Although I do tend to keep cheating and peaking ahead here and there. I have to translate some of the more britishy stuff for him, and sometimes help him put stuff in context, like how the titanic crashing into Buckingham palace would be like the titanic crashing into the white house. It's definitely interesting to put the show into perspective, since we see some things a bit differently, being Americans as we are.
Anyway... What is this DW live thing you guys are mentioning?

Anyway... What is this DW live thing you guys are mentioning? (Considering how frequently this question gets asked I'm wondering if we should have a sticky with an FAQ about the forum or something. Or I may just add a note to my announcements. Hmm.) DW Live is a group chat on Saturday nights where we play a story from the show and discuss it. And yes, there tends to be a fair amount of insanity, but don't let that frighten you off. I just posted about the next two weeks here. Hopefully that helps clear things up.

So when you say you all watch it, do you mean everyone watches it on their own, or is there a place where you all stream it from or something? Gosh, I wish I'd checked back up on this thread a couple of hours ago, I've just missed it apparently. Ah, but it takes quite a bit of insanity to frighten me off, fortunately! XD

Livestream hosts the video for us at livestream.com/dwlive. If you don't mind missing the first five episodes of the War Games (there's a lot of filler, I don't think you would be too lost or anything), episodes 6-10 will be this week, so it'd be great if you could make it. If not, there will be many more chances - it's every week at the same time.

Tctgbwsgd (that was, time chickens, they etc.) you have a very long name! Anyway, have you looked up doctor who on wikiquote? Sorry to be asserting myself so much when I'm a newbie, but I've been a whovian for a while
