I just thought we might like to have a thread to post links to our festive fics, as I know I'm not the only one here plotting to write one.
And it will be Nov 25th tomorrow, so you can't pretend Christmas isn't nearly here.
(I always work on the basis that it is allowed to be Christmas once my book festival is over, but this is a personal POV!)
Anyway, here we are.
Don't worry, I won't post my fic till Dec. But if anyone else wants to, or to link to other people's stuff for those who need a little Xmas cheer in order to get themselves out and shopping, well, here's a thread.
Disclaimer: Please note that this thread has invisible reindeer and elves, virtual mince pies and Christmas cake and that Santa may put in a personal appearance at some point. The original poster cannot be held responsible for these things, nor for any stars, shepherds, angels, ghosts of Christmas Past, Dickens etc etc. Thank you.

Ooh, I like this idea. I hadn't planned on doing a holiday tale, but you tempt me to now.

Oh, DO!!! I'm pretty sure a Christmassy fic from you would be a definite seasonal highlight. ;D Mine is just very silly. And I made it sillier last night. And there will be a competition, but more of that anon...

My Christmas fic got okayed onto Teaspoon yesterday, so you may get out the mince pies and... er... cringe at the tacky mess that is UNIT: The Great Mince Pie Mystery. (Sadly, it is 1980s UNIT, but has Sarah Jane, K9, Colonel Crichton and Bambera, although I realise none of these make up for the lack of Benton and the Brigadier and the Master making a surprise appearance from behind the Christmas tree while cunningly disguised as an elf.) I was doing a sort of competition about the number of Christmas songs referred to in it, but this only scared people. So I'll only apologise for the fact that perfectly sensible characters are forced to spout Abba, Gary Glitter and Little Donkey. www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=34271Disclaimer - Any Scrooges out there: you won't like it. There's snow and tinsel and stuff.

It apparently doesn't take much to shove me off the holiday cliff - my thanks to Starflower who said the fateful words "What if it were star shaped?" (she wins a six-year-old cameo as a result!) and to Evelyn who helped greatly in imagining the children and their varied reactions. I also admit I'm predicatable - it's Three and Jo, but hey - it has Santa Claus too. Sort of. And Benton! And Yates! Wishing on a Peppermint Starwww.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=34310

It's one of those goey treats you only have at Christmas, when (over here) you're pretending it's snowing and not just cold and rainy and are in the mood for something cosy. I loved the dressing up, especially poor Benton. Well, come on, now. Didn't JJ say he had a ghost Christmas fic? December's nearly over!

I'm planning on at least one for a Secret Santa gift, but I'm considering another for Two, but I can't decide whether it should be with Jamie and Victoria or Ben and Polly. What do you guys and girls think? I'd love feedback.

What do you guys and girls think? I'd love feedback. Answer these questions and your answer will come 1. Have I written more Jamie/Victoria or Polly and Ben? (do the pair you haven;t written much) 2. Which characters am I best writing without much research or reminders? 3. What am I really in the mood for? Who am I digging? 3.

Well, come on, now. Didn't JJ say he had a ghost Christmas fic? December's nearly over! Yeah, I'll be all RTD-like by giving out the title - it's called "A Ghost Story for Christmas" and features Three, Jo, Benton, Yatesy, the Brig, Delgado!Master, Liz Shaw and sundry other characters (including the Brig's not-really-canonical family members as featured in Battlelines, and of course Doris, in the present-day-set top-and-tail bits). And, as all of that suggests, it's kind of grown out of hand like many of my fics do; it started off fluffy, but now it wants a plot and everything... It'll definitely be ready for Christmas itself. Probably. Hopefully. ;D

I'm now really worried. ;D Well, not really. But, short and festive, creepy ghosts! LIke in the Short Trips Christmas books... No gigantic UNIT WIPs. Remember your New years' resolution. Remember your readers with their limited reading time as they have to fly off to Amazon to buy things and... I don't know what I'm doing here, I should be off marrying Four and Seven to unlikely people instead. Plus, I did a Christmas meme on LJ and will be probably wondering round singing "Five Pri-i-imsongs!" for the rest of the year (which, thankfully, isn't long). PS. If you want to do it RTD style, you need to give us a few words the story will include as well.

And, Abby, I can't possibly answer that - I'd always say Ben and Polly! ;D
But what sort of story do you have in your head and who fits it better, because they are quite different pairings and would give a story a very different sort of feel.

Remember your readers with their limited reading time as they have to fly off to Amazon to buy things and... Oh, Good Lord no - nothing gigantic. No, it'll be a one-parter. Probably. Definitely all done and dusted by Xmas. Almost certainly. I'm not going to go giving out first and last lines like Rusty does, because those could still change. I'll just say that the main action takes place at Xmas 1971, which would mean that Season 8 would have to span 1971-72 (because The Daemons takes place in April-May, and after that the Master is banged up in jail until The Sea Devils, and Xmas 1970 seems to me to be too early). Think of it as my contribution to the ongoing UNIT dating controversy... Oh, and my research (ie Google) tells me that the Xmas no. 1 song in 1971 was none other than Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the West) by Benny Hill. He beat T. Rex into the number 2 spot...

Well, you know I said nothing gigantic...er...
It's growing before my eyes, but it isn't going to be an epic; it will be done and dusted by Xmas. Yes.
I need an editor, is what I need... ;D

It was another world. ;D (BTW, one of the reasons I got side-tracked into quoting songs in mine was not only was it Band Aid, but also 1984 saw Last Christmas, Another Rock and Roll Christmas and Thank God It's Christmas released. I didn't check for any more. It just seemed to be the year for it.) Maybe someone should complain about novelty Christmas records?? And, Primsong, don't, you devil's advocate, you! Because: 1. Of his NYR (to drink 5 glasses of television daily) 2. Because creepy Xmas ghost fic should be tightly written and like ice or crystal or something, because it just should. (Not because I would be averse to a UNIT epic by JJ, that would be fun.) There's a reason why ghost stories have a tendency to be short stories - they should be told at night and make people's hair stand on end. Really, there's a law. I mean, I can't remember where, but... Sorry, I'm teasing. If it ends up very long, just make your paragraphs bite-sized and your chapters not too whopping and I will be reading it as long as you write the thing, I'm sure. "Five Pri-i-i-msongs!" ;D

Oh yes, in full agreement on the subject of Xmas ghost stories - I mean, those things are an artform unto themselves, preferably plotted so tightly you could sing it, as someone once said about some story I'm forgetting the name of, and with all of those dropped hints and carefully building tension, turning the screw (no pun intended!) on the reader until the horrifying climax, and even then the true nature of the horror is better chillingly hinted at than stated outright...
So yeah, a bit of finely-crafter M R James pastiche would be just the ticket, but now I've got this big stupid concoction of present-day-Brig flashbacking to the UNIT family days, and Three flashbacking to him and the Master back on Gallifrey, and the Master humming Xmas carols as he puts his diabolical plot into motion, and Liz/Brig and...yeah...
So, yeah, with the thing about half-written but still sketchy in places, I'm now in the grips of one of those crises of confidence I sometimes get with my fics and wondering if it would have been better to go with my original idea, which was Simm!Master hosting some horrifying parody of an oldschool Val Doonican-style Xmas special...
No, maybe not... ;D

No no no no no no no....!
Don't stop writing it!
I like the sounds of the flashbacks. Ah, nostalgic Christmas reminiscnes (I can't type, sorry) - that would work too. That sounds like a lot of fun.
It's too late for a Christmas ghost story, but I might do a wintry fic. (Only not with a ghost. My other ghost was more than enough trouble. Besides, I did UNIT ghost fic once before.)
And, City of Death. DisContiunity Guide. ;D

Indeed! That's where I read it. A great way of putting it...
Wintry fic sounds like a good idea, actually; ghosts optional. ;D
I don't about nostalgic reminiscences - I've discovered that I don't do Xmas cheer very well in fic. I try, but then I end up with stuff like Seven and Ace in the trenches...

Well, whatever you want to call the flashbacks you're describing it sounds good to me. And, don't worry about that. I liked your Seven and Ace in the trenches fic very much. (It might even have been the first one I read, but I'm usually wrong whenever I claim something like that. ) You can always just write December angst and I'll pass you some mince pies and put on the tacky Christmas songs afterwards. You can see I had tons of the stuff left over - I had to cater for an army... Just don't eat the Christmas cake, okay?
