Barbara Wright « Thread Started on Oct 31, 2009, 3:53pm »
I thought (after I verged to the negative last night - I am so sorry; rl is being all over the place) I'd look and see who didn't have a thread of their gloriousness and... we have an Ian and a Susan thread but not one for Barbara?
This must be put right at once!
(There's a lot of companions without a thread. I could be busy).
Anyway, what is there left to say about the awesomeness of Barbara, she who civilised the Doctor and taught him the value of human beings. His first sorry was to her. She became the desire of every evil being in the cosmos long before Peri got there - as well as Ian, of course.
History teacher, rebel in a cardigan and a goddess to boot.
And she thinks travelling in the TARDIS may probably be the most exciting part of her life. What else is she planning?
The Sensorites proves the wonderfulness of Barbara. The plot ambles on, until they bring her down in which she solves everything in five minutes and the Doctor learns always to choose Barbara when picking teams after that (if Ian doesn't nip in first).
Ian/Barbara are so canon. (Just ask David Whitaker. Well, if you could.) Where would this show be without them?

Barbara is indeed made of awesome and win and wonderful, and her and Ian's are SO canon, seriously, of all the TARDIS hook-up, they're the only that never gets mentioned with a tongue-in-cheek eye roll.
Except maybe Ben and Polly, they're pretty awesome too, but alas, burnation.
...
I do terrible things to Ian and Barbara in fic. *appologises to them*

Yeah, but the fic you're talking about is wonderful all the same; made me get something in my eye. Yes; something. In my eye.
Yes, Ian/Barbara's the real deal. Doesn't matter if it's "your ship" or not, denying it's like denying the TARDIS is blue or that Daleks are murderous nutcases, or something (now Abby's going to tell me I'm talking rubbish! Not an unusual activity for me! ).

* wonders nervously about ready angsty fic* O_o
Well, the TARDIS was briefly pink once, but that's a nice way of putting it.
My middle sister was never keen on DW till 2005, but she was kind and always watched it with me. However, the First Doctor and Barbara she really, really liked! She had taste, you see.

Yes, I think I've heard that. And with the sort of processes they used in 60s-era b&w TV, not only would pale colours look white, but sometimes they'd have to have things painted odd colours so that they'd show up properly onscreen, or _look_ like they were the right colour.

The 1960s Tardis console was very pale green, because this color was considered to show up as more white than white itself, on B&W videotape. I have no idea whether this idea panned out or not... I do know that in some of the earliest Pertwee stories, we do see a pale green console, a holdover from the Hartnell days, after the point when this color scheme would have been of any use to anyone....

Okay, now, I started a thread about the awesomeness that is Barbara Wright, History teacher and Aztec goddess... and you lot start using it to talk about the colour of the TARDIS walls?
Now, if it were a Dodo thread, I suppose I could understand it, but really.

Er, yes. We did, didn't we?
Barbara, of course, is in the small yet exclusive club of companions who have taken out a Dalek (more than one Dalek, perhaps, come to think of it!) in single combat. With a lorry. It doesn't get much more awesome than that, does it?
And yes, Barbara is completely awesome and there was never anyone else quite like her. Barbara is a very real character, if you know what I mean. She's mature and competent, but not without her weaknesses. She's not textbook pretty, but she has a way of carrying herself that makes you notice how beautiful she is.
*jawdrop* Barbara is a very real character, if you know what I mean. She's mature and competent, but not without her weaknesses. She's not textbook pretty, but she has a way of carrying herself that makes you notice how beautiful she is.
Plus a wicked sense of humour.
Yes, I agree completely. She's always been one of my favourite companions, even from the books, but the first time I had enough Who vids to start my watching-in-order kick, I found the sheer addictiveness of the first episodes amazing. And Ian and Barbara being very real in the middle of it all, especially Barbara, carry you through.
And, well everybody seems to notice how beautiful she is.
I'm feeling gushy now, so I'm tyring to think of something negative and I can't. Forget Rose and even Sarah Jane, Barbara is probably the human who's been the most influential to the Doctor.
Jacqueline Hill, you were, quite, quite marvellous. Seriously so.
